Can't figure out Memory Cards

I personally, never had a PS2 and really just know basic stuff about it, I just recently started playing a lot in PCSX2 Nightly and I am mainly playing 2 games, NFSU2 and MGS2, I have two Memory Cards for each game, but whenever I boot MGS2 with just one memory card it just doesn't recognize the save file, but when I put the other NFSU2 memory card the game recognizes my save file but always in slot 2.

I am sorry if this question is stupid or something, as I said I never had any experience with a PS2, but why does this happen?, It just seems the memory card is dependent of the other to function in MGS2

Some games will need to have their memcard in a specific pport to work IIRC.
You never had a PS2, but now that you have one, you can give a try on your real console to see if the behaviour is the same
