I want to see the lines in red which have the word "stretch", or which start with "buffers:", or which have "SPU2" in them.

Or just post a full log with "inline commentary", e.g. "[COMMENT: ---- here there was a click ---]" etc.

Oh.  Oops, I read your post before you made your edit.  I saw where you said the checkboxes underneath "Show in console" didn't matter, so I didn't get the buffer messages.



So I ran Disgaea again with the latency at 100ms.  I turned off other optional log sources to attempt to focus on the sources you told me to enable.  Since there was a buffer message every second or so, I only ran it for so long.  Here's the full log from this test.  I don't really have any commentary to add to the log.  At 100ms, there isn't any issue with the audio quality other than certain sound effects being out of sync.

I noticed a few differences in there, for sure, but I don't know if any are a clue as to what may be going on.  I would make an attempt to record the game window in OBS Studio to show what sort of sync issue I'm talking about, but I don't know if the added overhead of OBS may cause more problems.

Well, the logs don't show any issues with the strecher, which matches your initial description that the clicks and distortion disappear with stretcher latency of 50ms or higher (your logs are with 300ms and 100ms).

In fact, the stretcher is in perfect balance with tempo of 1.0000, i.e. it doesn't do stretching at all and uses buffering of 300ms or 100ms according to the setting.

As far as I can tell so far, the issue is outside PCSX2.
- Doesn't happen on windows.
- Happens on linux system with both the linux version of PCSX2 and the windows version on wine.
- The logs show the stretcher has no issue and it uses the correct buffer length as configured.

- but you still hear latency in some sounds but not others.

I don't know... try alsa without pulseaudio wrapper maybe?

I think I may have found the issue, however I have to wait and see if the fix ends up causing problems with audio quality for the rest of my system.  I'm going to get wordy and talk about some things unrelated to PCSX2, but it kind of ties together, I think.

In the past few years I've distro-hopped a bit, and at one point I tried Arch Linux.  On Arch, I found the audio would occasionally glitch or skip.  I found a fix on the Arch Wiki.  https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pul..._crackling

It explains how PulseAudio went from interrupt-based scheduling to timer-based scheduling.  Makes zero sense to me.  But I did what the wiki said, and it fixed my issues.  I am currently using openSUSE Tumbleweed which, like Arch, is a rolling-release distro.  I forget if I added that fix on this install as a precaution or if it came with the fix pre-configured.

Basically, removing the fix (i.e. returning PulseAudio to the current default of timer-based scheduling) seems to fix the audio lag.  On the default 300ms latency the affected sound effects still sounded a tiny bit late, so I lowered it to 150ms, and now it seems to be running just fine.  The PCSX2 log window did show some ALSA warnings, I think about buffer underflows, but the audio didn't seem to have any issues, so I didn't think it was anything worth reporting yet.

Thing is, I don't know yet if removing the PulseAudio fix will cause glitches in other audio output or if the version openSUSE Tumbleweed ships doesn't have the issue present in Arch's version somehow.  I don't think I had the Pulse issue before I tried Arch, but I also don't know if other distros I tried already had the fix in the config file by default.  That's one annoyance of Linux.  Each distro has their own defaults in config files, and possibly even differences in what options they used when compiling the binaries.

I should note that I only did a very quick test of Disgaea and Suikoden IV on the menus where I noticed the lag.  I didn't try everything, nor have I tested other apps.  It's too late at night for a full run of tests.  I just thought that this might be the cause and decided to give it a really quick look, and it seems to have helped.  So here's hoping it fixes the PCSX2 audio and doesn't cause other problems.
