Castlevania: Curse of Darkness framerate drops on 720p

System specs:

i5-2500k @ 4 Ghz
8G DDR3 1333 RAM
Nvidia GTX 730 2GB
OS: Linux Mint (latest)

Cannot seem to get Castlevania: Curse of Darkness at solid 60fps at 720p, only with PS2 native resolution. At 720p the game at points drops to 71%. All settings are original default, except when I up the resolution to 720p. I believe I should be able to get better performance with my system specs. 

Any tips or is this game just not going to run at 720p for me smoothly?

You won't get much better performance, your system is below the requirements, see here: https://github.com/PCSX2/pcsx2#system-requirements
