Difference between 2.6ghz celeron and 1.7ghz i5 core?

People say that i5 core is absolutely better than crap cpus like celeron,and I know it, but what exactly is the difference?

Why is i5 4210U(for example) of 1.7ghz is better than intel celeron 2.4ghz N2830?

The i5 has a max turbo frequency of 2.7GHZ for one core so it's not really 1.7GHZ.

Its a bit about performance per cycle.

During one cycle the i5 can do much more calculations. Therefore the actual performance is much higher.

To estimate performance you should use FLOPS and not GHz.

FLOPS = Frequency x Cores x Evaluations per cycle

And the main difference between celerons and i5's is the last factor.




Btw. this is also one of the reasons why emulating ps2 is that hard. We need a lot of cycles on the pc to emulate one cycle on the ps2. Therefore even if the base frequency is larger than for the ps2 it is not possible to emulate in real time if the FLOPS are too low. Additional we have some other drawbacks (floating point numbers, synchronization, less cores/threads) that reduces performance.
