Easier way to 'update' the source files on my computer?

I believed that sync option in the GUI once and used it while I was having unsynced changes. It did the pull instead of push and I had to do the commit all over again. from that instance, I'm not trusting that sync option in the GUI. though, it does work most of time. but, sometimes it does the pull. the Git shell is more reliable and allows more features.
We're supposed to be working as a team, if we aren't helping and suggesting things to each other, we aren't working as a team.

You prolly hadn't committed the changes before the sync.
