FIXED: Bad performance on Ubuntu with Intel Graphics Iris 640

In a short sentence my problem: in the same hardware, PCSX2 runs awesome on Windows, but really bad on Ubuntu 18.04 (updated with Mesa 19.1).

Long description:

I have a work notebook, with Ubuntu 18.04, which has an Intel Core-i7-4702HQ and hybrid graphics: an old Intel HD 4600 + a NVidia Quadro K1100M.

On this machine, glmark2 scores around 800 for Intel HD, 2600 for the NVidia card.

With PCSX2, testing Gran Turismo 4, I have the following performance in bottleneck situations (like rolling starts):

- OpenGL hardware render on Intel HD 4600: 40% FPS
- OpenGL soft render: 55% FPS
- OpenGL hardware render on NVidia Quadro: 120% FPS

Then, I got an Intel NUC7i5BNK, which has similar performance as my notebook: the Intel-Core-i5-7260U, while not octacore, has a slightly better single and double core performance than the old Core-i7-4702HQ.

The graphics card Intel-Iris-Plus-640-Mobile, while onboard, has a good performance: around 2500 on glmark2. And one nice plus: as more RAM I have, more it'll use for VRAM.

So, I've installed the same Ubuntu and the same PCSX2 (from the daily builds, and even compile one), but the result was very disappointing:

- OpenGL soft render: 52% FPS (ok, expected)
- OpenGL hardware render on NVidia Quadro: 55% FPS

The PCSX2 configs are the same: GS core at level 3 (balanced, so MTU is active), 2 additional threads, lowest resolution.

I tried everything possible: different XOrg configs, different PCSX2 config levels, plugins, but the results are always the same.

Initially I thought that could be the RAM: even I was using a really tuned Unity desktop (all the system using only 300MB), I had only 4GB RAM.

Then I got more 4GB, (i.e., 8GB total, in dual channel). In Windows, this made the performance hit the expected level (more than 100% GPS on GT4). But on Ubuntu, it made NO DIFFERENCE AT ALL! But this only for PCSX2: other heavy emulators, like Dolphins, got the expected performance boost.

I tried to compile PCSX2 using the same package flags:

I tried without -DDISABLE_ADVANCE_SIMD=TRUE too, barely difference (57% FPS).

I tried all the available plugins (AV2, SS4, legacy), checked the logs (OpenGL hardware was properly detected, no errors), no difference in results.

If the problem were the drivers, I would not see the glmark2 scoring high score, or Dolphin improvements.

Is there something like a compile flag that I should add to PCSX2 to enable more RAM usage or something like that?

- Did you install the properitary driver for your Nvidia? This is highly recommended if you need performance (It looks like you did, probably there's some conflicting driver stuff), How did you install it if so? Did you try to update it aswell? Maybe take a look here: https://www.mvps.net/docs/install-nvidia...ver-linux/ (Be careful on install/uninstall graphics driver!)
- Probably try to remove your PCSX2-config to let it start from scratch, sometimes there are issues
- Can you test other graphics-heavy applications (games) to verify if your card and driver is working properly?

XXXBold: the Nvidia machine is the one where everything is working as expected. The new machine is the one with Intel i915 driver where the performance is not the expected.

Yes, I already tried with a new config.

Yes, like I stated, I checked other heavy emulators and games, and they're fine.

Ah, okay, so you're trying to use your Intel graphics then.

I see you're using mesa 19.2, which should be okay so far. However, if you want, you can try the 19.3-git PPA: https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/ub...cs-drivers which might increase your performance a bit, but I don't think that will fill the gap to your Windows performance.

What's your CPU usage when running PCSX2? Are there cores sitting on 100%? Maybe your scheduler isn't behaving as you want, IDK about the NUCs but sometimes that's an issue with mobile devices. Did you try to disable Power saving options?

How's the resource usage in PCSX2 (EE, GS, VU)?

One reeeeeeealy interesting note about this setup. In an attempt to fix the bad performance, I've re-installed Ubuntu, using the default configuration (Gnome as Desktop Environment).

For my surprise, it ran fast, as expected! Then I changed the DE to be Unity and started to see again the bad performance!

No sure what exactly is the issue, but something related to Unity was reducing the performance. In the past, I had issues with logindm not allowing hardware acceleration in a second display.
