FPS drop when in 3D

I’m trying to set up my roommate’s machine to play twisted metal black against me, another roommate and an actual PS2. I’m having a problem where everything works fine with two-dimensional stuff, like showing company logos or prerendered videos, but is soon as it kicks into rendering three-dimensional scenes, the frame rate drops to the floor and audio skips. I’ve tried turning all the settings down to native resolution and minimal, but it doesn’t make any difference. Speed hacks don’t have any affect. Multiple ROMs have the same problem.  Playing games like left 4 dead on 2 max settings has no issue on this machine, so I know the graphics drivers are working properly. When the game gets to a 3D scene, the first cpu core throws to 100% utilization but I read that’s normal. Rendering in software mode made no difference. 

What am I missing? 

Cpu: i3-8100 @ 3.6ghz
Pcsx2 version: 1.5.0-0
OS: Ubuntu 19.04
GPU: Radeon RX 570

Please post the contents of the emulog.txt file after the problem occurs. The file can be found in "My Documents\PCSX2\logs" for the installer version or in "PCSX2\logs" for the portable/binary version.

roommates. We have the regular PS2, my mac with the windows version, and my roommate's linux machine. There's a dev9 plugin for pcsx2 that works without winpcap. It's not working on the linux machine yet, but we're still working on that.

Ultimately, we want to be able to play twisted metal black online together. I'm just testing against FFX since it's likely a more commonly played game.
