whenever you are trying to pass a crash you should be using memcard saves and not save states as it's likely the problem is already in the savestate.

sometimes that might be true but actually i had an earlier problem with some game freezes in a scene and i was able to bypass them by quicksaving just before the crash and loading again

but maybe it was just luck

Its obviously a good thing you managed to get past those freezes. For the future try and use memcards as they will work much better if the problem has to do with your settings. If its just random crashes savestates will work of course.
