The only thing I used the directory utility for would be to enable root user.
you use "sudo tcsh" to access stuff with root privileges in Terminal. Terminal is the application that is just text on a white background, unless you modified it, in wich case, I shouldn't need to be telling you this ^_^
X11 and Xquartz is the same thing, the difference is that X11 used(don't know if it still is) to come pre-installed on your Mac OS X installation, whereas Xquartz is the newer version of X11.
And ALL the typing here goes on in Terminal and X11, there is NO TYPING whatsoever involved in the Directory Utility
EDIT:
The X11 terminal window IS NOT the same as Terminal. If your OS is in a language other than English, I described what it looks like by default above
