GPU upgrade r9 280 or r9 285
#1
My poor Radeon 6870 is showing it's age (and as evidence by random red lines that sometimes appear may be crapping out). Some PCSX2 games I can only run at 2x IR and it's bottlenecking my i5 3470.

I can get either of those cards for a similar price through sales and I'm just ready to upgrade. Does anyone have these cards and could reference their performance in PCSX2? How many x IR am I looking at and are their any problems with newer cards in PCSX2 that I should be aware of?

That card would not bottleneck PCSX2 just FYI.

Are you referring to my current card or the r9 280 series?

Your current card. You should be able to 3x almost any game. Unless the card itself has issues.

In DQVIII I hit around 90% GPU usage at 3x ir with loooots of lag whenever there are 5+ enemies on screen or flashy attacks happen. It hovers around 60-70% in the overworld (no lag). However, 2x IR is smooth sailing throughout.

DQ8 is one of the exceptions. It's on my most GPU demanding list.

Well then lol. I want to run it at 4-6x IR if possible. 3x looks ok but 6x is just so gorgeous.

Edit, I should also mention I drive dual displays.

you current card can be limitation but that depend on the game, some games are cpu heavy other more gpu heavy some are both. either of the 2 card you mention would be over kill of pcsx2 in terms of power needed from gpu

So yes the card you have can be but also game depened if you trying to run anything higher then 3x on that card i willing to bet you start to run into issue with framerates

Well I don't intend to JUST play PCSX2 with it but about 70% of what I use my desktop for is emulation. (Dolphin and PCSX2). I also play regular PC games I also want a GPU that can keep up with my i5 3470 I have a hard time believing there are PS2 games that couldn't run on my i5.

the card you listed are over killed of pcsx2 needs, as for pc stuff it would be fine , as for ps2 game your i5 cant cope with they are there ,but that just some game , but for most part the i5 is fine.

I have way more bottleneck on my cpu when comes to pcsx2 then you do.
