I have way more bottleneck on my cpu when comes to pcsx2 then you do.

Alright, so I'm pretty much guaranteed 6x IR in any game? As for games the i5 3470 can't run outright could you give an example? I want to know what games to avoid when buying PS2 games.

not saying guarenteed there is not such thing when it comes to emulation, most game should be able to do 6x possible, never run at higher then 4x as i never saw much diffrence when actual gaming, unless i stick my face right on top the screen.

how update that is i dont know, i just know there are some game that can still be bottleneck by current cpu, but that list probably isnt as being as use to.

game that use Snowblind engine are one such games, and according to that thread so is primal. but there are game out there

I can get either of those cards for a similar price through sales and I'm just ready to upgrade. Does anyone have these cards and could reference their performance in PCSX2? How many x IR am I looking at and are their any problems with newer cards in PCSX2 that I should be aware of?

Out of those 2 cards the 280 is better. They're not needed for pcsx2(except maybe 4k+), but they'll be great for pc games.

there are always some exceptions, ZOE2 is highly demanding on 6X native. it might run slow on your GPU at high internal resolutions. but, other than that your GPU will be quite enough for most of the ps2 games at 4x native. ( even at some demanding games).

Even with my gtx980 I don't go x6 in every games, by the way x6 is useless on a 24", x4x/x5 is perfect.
Also AMD cards are the best at this price range, you can go on it, If I were you I'd buy a second hand card for this price, like a 7970ghz (the card has been rebranded into r9 280x, but its cheaper cause of the name), when you aint got a lot of money I think its the best choice but its as you wish, the 280/285 will do it as a mid range card if you are not pushing graphics too high on the last games.
For PCSX2 it will be enough to play fine on x3, x4 I bet, maybe the r9 280 will be better because of its 384bits bus.

Can you explain how the 280 (non-x) is better than the 285? Every benchmark i can find the 285 wipes it across the board. The only difference is ive found the 280 for about $20 cheaper.

The r9 280 is better, its a rebranded hd7950, a gtx670 equivalent.
The r9 285 is a new gpu, its compatible with freesync (and true audio but its useless), its almost the same performances than the r9 280.
So if you don't plan to buy a freesync monitor you can choose the r9 280.. or a hd 7950 (in second hand) its the same for even cheaper.
I think (not sure) the r9 280 don't support mantle, but its a bit useless too, Mantle is dead and supported by not many games.

I almost forgot.. the r9 285 got 2gb vram.. the 280 have 3gb and for cheaper... so its a nomatch, even more if you plan a crossfire.

So, because it's a rebranded 7950 that means I should ignore the significantly better performance? I'm a bit lost here.

I was mainly asking because I wasn't sure if the performance bump was worth the extra ~$20.

What ?? Re-read my post. Its a rebranded 7950, thats a 7950, thats all, I'm writing its a best choice if you don't want a freesync monitor.
If the 285 is a new gpu it doesnt means its more powerfull, it just have new fonctions (like gsync or mantle or true audio).
For me the 280 win because it got more vram and its cheaper.

And your site is full of *****, don't read that.
Here is a good site for gpu tests :
