GTA 4 Configuration
#1
Hello, I decided to give GTA4 a shot with this emulator PCSX2.

So I see many threads of people having problems with the game, mostly older threads and I tried it myself with my i5 8400 CPU it not working very well. I have slow game speed and variable music speed. What's strange is, the game is slowing but the processor is not always used at 100%. I have cores running at 100% occasionnaly but not all the time, when 1 core runs at 100% the game is obviously not working well.

I tried to follow this configuration procedure with my revision of 1.4.0 of PCSX2 on Linux mint 19.3 based on Ubuntu "Bionic" 18.04 LTS but I think some of my menus must be different then MS windows, I am unable to complete the whole configuration procedure from thread #1.

I would have these question

#1. I could easily spend quite some time testing various configurations, in your opinion and to start with my processor i5-8400 and UHD 630, is it enough to meet the minimum requirement?
#2. And Is there a complete configuration procedure for 1.4.0 for Linux I could follow?
#3. If I have no success with GTA4, should I try with GTA3 instead as it could be much easier to play because it's an older game?

Thanks.

No.
Your CPU is good, but your GPU clearly sucks for a game that tends to hammer it

I don't think so. SInce 1.4.0 is severely outdated, i don't think you should use it

If you have it, make your iso and give it a try. but I wouldn't buy it on purpose. GT3 can be very demanding too.

(BTW, GTA stands for Gran Theft Auto. GT for Gran turismo)
CPU : AMD Ryzen 7 3800X
Mobo : Asus PRIME B450-PLUS
GPU : NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070
RAM : 16 Go

I always mix GTA and GT.. thanks for the reminder.

So I need to focus on upgrading the GPU. I hear Linux has better support for Nvidia, these are affordable from my local store.. GeForce a 710 or a 1030. would the 1030 be strong enough?
ASUS GT1030-2G-CSM(LP)2GB, DVI,HDMI
132.00 $
ASUS PH-GT1030-O2G, 2GB, DVI,HDMI
143.00 $
ASUS GT710-SL-2GD5-CSM LP 2G,D5,DVI,HDM
91.00 $
ASUS GT710-SL-1GD5-BRK LP 1G,D5,DVI,HDM
73.00 $

According to the website.. 1.4.0 is the latest version for Linux..

GT3 is is demanding too, ok that's bad.

Well thanks for the info jesalvein. If the 1.4.0 revision is the latest for linux then I guess I should forget about the video card right?

I find this very odd, I created an ISO out of my GT3 DVD, just to try it out and it's about the same thing as GT4 just as you say...  I found an application to monitor the Intel integrated graphics called intel-gpu-tools to give me an idea of what,s happening with the GPU... and the readings don't add up.

It seems to be very hard for the computer in menus.. when the CPU is OK but the GPU is obviously working quite a bit, it's slowing down everything.

Picking a car will max out the GPU and 1 CPU core only. Almost nothing is happening in the game.

While playing, the render will not raise to 100% but the CPU will often go to 100%. The game speed will vary from 100% to 3x%, 10 seconds 100%, 10 seconds slower. But the render is never at 100%

This is the evidence of it working at full speed while both the CPU and the GPU are bellow 100%.. odd.

What's happening exactly?
