GZIP compression safe?
#11
Probably depends on your cpu. If you are struggling the decompression can kill you. (Single core/dual core cpu's; low STR)

But I think avih or somebody in his thread said once that it can even speed up due to better caching.

Not if you use pigz (written by the author of zlib/gzip):
Windows - https://blog.kowalczyk.info/software/pig...ndows.html
Source code: http://zlib.net/pigz/

With pigz, compressing ISOs to gzip is ultra fast.

Might just give that a whirl. My ISO folder is running over 130GB now. Might be handy to compress some of these.
AMD Ryzen 5 3600 @ 3.60~4.20 GHz | Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3200
MSI GeForce GTX 1660 Super @ 6 GB | Samsung 980 1TB | Windows 10 Pro x64 (22H2)

Thank for explanation.
Slow HDD need to less read when file is compressed, thats advantage indeed.

Updated test
My test on MOH Frontline US
ISO: 3,15GB
CSO: 2,73GB  >>>maxcso default                       <<<very slow
CSO: 2,65GB  >>>maxcso --block=16384 --fast  <<<fast
CSO: 2,63GB  >>>maxcso --block=16384           <<<very slow
GZIP: 2,62GB  >>>pigz -9 level                             <<<fast

ISZ: 2,62GB                                                  <<<fast
GZIP: 2,60GB  >>>7zip Maximum compression    <<<reasonable speed

Latest version of pigz on github can cope now with >4GB files.

its best to use --block=16384 with maxcso as well, unknownbrackets recommended that setting for PS2 games.

"Latest" is from 2013, before gzip ISO support was added to PCSX2. And yes, it did and does support >4G files.

Wait you are saying default CSO was slower than 7zip gzip? Dafuq? Gzip was massively slower for me. As I said gzip was about 5 times slower when I ran the tests on my FX6300 @4.6Ghz. Yes I know it's not the best STR CPU but till it shouldn't be that much different. Hmmm.

Anyway I didn't know about pigz. Good stuff. My ISO folder is up to a whopping 178GB. If only I could be arsed to compress it XD

Also somehow the < > signs in that quote broke it for me and made my reply appear in it like the /quote wasn't there. Hmm.

Nope, I didn't. See the edit and also http://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-Mybb-upgr...#pid490968

Because I'm a mod I have HTML permissions and the less than and greater than in the quote was trying to be parsed as a tag and rekt the post.
