Gran Turismo 3 A-Spec FPS problems
#1
Hey there pcsx2 forums, nice to see you again. I've been here a few years ago, but my acc got deleted, I believe because of inactivity.

Anyways, I'm having FPS issues with Gran Turismo 3. I know, that doesn't come as a surprise for most of you guys, but, I only need like 10 FPS to get the game fully playable.

My rig:
-PSU Cheapest Chieftec 350W power supply possible
-RAM 2x1GB Kingmax 800Mhz
-CPU Intel Core2Duo E4600 (2.4GHz, 2 cores) (no overclocking)
-VGA ASUS EAH6670 1GB DDR5 (DX11)
-OS Windows7 64-bit

I'm using the PAL version of GT3 so I need 50 fps, and I'm using the latest PCSX2 release (1.2.1), and I believe I tried every possible speedhack for gaining a little bit more FPS.

Most the time, I can reach an average of 35-42 FPS, but, it's kinda disappointing because whenever I look backwards during a race, the FPS goes up to almost 50, and on some points of some tracks, the game is fully 50FPS for a few corners, so, it's like a tease.

I'm asking you guys if there is a way to increase the FPS juuuuust a little bit so I can play, please tell me.

Here's my pcsx setup:

if you only want a little performance boost, you can overclock or try this thread by saiki which speeds up some old dual core's on latest rev's

First of all, disable manual gamefixes. I'm surprised you haven't killed the game yet. Second you probably won't get full speed on that PC. It's just too weak

Well I've played around a little more with my GS plugin settings and strangely enough, WITHExcl added texture filtering and anti aliasing, I gained 5 fps. On Turbo mode (2 frame draw, 2 frame skip), I can reach 50fps on most parts of the track, but without turbo frameskipping, my fps is between 30 and 44 throughout the track. Any tips?

AA causes slowdowns. Turn it off if you want better performance.
AMD Ryzen 5 3600 @ 3.60~4.20 GHz | Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3200
MSI GeForce GTX 1660 Super @ 6 GB | Samsung 980 1TB | Windows 10 Pro x64 (22H2)

Tell you the truth, I seem to have more fps with AA on. Plus, resolution has almost no effect on my FPS. I tried some resolution settings while standing on the grass near the track: native (44), 3x native (43), 384x384px (44), so, I left the res on 3x native.

In Gsdx window turn on DX9 mode, disable "Allow 8-bit textures" and enable "Alpha Correction" (not available in DX11). Both options give me some speedboost, especially when I disable "Allow 8-bit textures". Hope it helps you.

Well, that didn't work. FPS dropped to 33... Looks like I gotta stick to DX11

Did you try to disable "Allow 8-bit textures" in DX11?

Also, which track do you use for testing? See, different tracks have different requirements. For instance, Midfield Raceway is not very tax resourcing, while sunset tracks have much higher requirements. The most heavy ones are Special Stages, especially those that have a wet road. So, what I want to say is that if you use the least demanding tracks for your testing purposes, then later in the game you will certainly have slowdowns.

I need to allow 8-bit textures, it gives me more fps.
Well these FPS stats I have written happened on Trial Mountain with a Corolla Trueno and with other npc cars. I experienced that the special stages have so much light sources and reflections, that the track drops fps about 10-15 more.
On the other hand, there's a B license exam with a Civic EK9, I believe on Midfield. That runs perfectly, full 50fps along the track.
