It's a technic to defeat artifacts by calculating subpixels.

Usually cards specify the amount of anti-aliasing they support (or not) in different APIs.
For example mine supports up to 16x in DirectX 11 mode and up to 8x in Direct3D 4.3.0 mode.
The difference in my honest opinion is not big after 4x. Also I noticed somekind of difference in the way MSAA works on DX and D3D, even though 16x in DX11 sounds like a higher number it looks equal to 8x of D3D.
