Well, I often get the auto-notifications that pop up once in a while telling me to update or before shutting it down, so yeah, I've updated it since then a couple of times.

I don't think turning off automatic updates has anything to do with his problem, or whether he'll getting viruses or having problems. The chances of them being the cause of his slowdown are slim at best
