I mean all the posts are all like that on here, so why not make the title kind of abnoxious? xb
Hey! Name's Mike, I've been roaming around the forums for a while but figured I'd make an account now, since I usually just read up on stuff on here and the sorts..

Here's the deal: I currently have a Core i5 4690 which beautifully runs most of the games I have on it due to having one of the best Single Core performance of all stock chips out there, and I bought it for this single reason, emulate PS2 because mine's DVD reader broke (first ever slim model btw) and missed playing some of my fav titles, PS2 was my childhood console.

But now since I'm starting this Multimedia school thingy, and do a lot of video editing, this 4690 isn't cutting it with it's 4 cores when I want to render above 2K video, so here's the problem:

I am thinking of getting a Xeon chip, the X5650 which is a 6 core machine with 12 threads, and will have to retire my i5 for it, it comes with a stock clock of 2.66Ghz, first gen i7 architecture, and I'm thinking of bumping it up to 3.5/4Ghz since it's an unlocked chip.

Will it be able to run my PS2 games? I am asking to anyone still rolling out the i7 9xx series of processors to see if anyone can guide me, it'd be a shame not being able to play my fav games and just let them be on my shelf.

If it helps, I have an European PS2 that I extracted the bios off of. So it's an european bios, every game will be in PAL.

FOR REFERENCE - GEEKBENCH SINGLE CORE - i5 4690(Stock) VS Xeon X5650 (4Ghz) (click me) (Geekbench link - Safe)

Games I play:
Gran Turismo 3/4
Midnight Club 3
Medal of Honor series
GTA Vice City Stories/Liberty City Stories
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory

Many thanks in advance. c:

First, using fast boot, you can run games from any region, not just PAL. Second, although the Xeon is able to be overclocked, the architecture brings down the instructions per cycle by a drastic amount and would be pointless to get for pcsx2. If you really want a 6 core, then you should try to save up for a new Haswell E rig with a 5820k

Basically what nobbs said, the old architecture would make it a pretty lousy chip. I'm pretty sure even an FX 6300 would/could outrank it. A 5820k should do you well.

I mean if any of you guys are fund of donating me the paper to get a 5820K, I'd gladly pick it up, but since this is my only option, I don't really have much choice. xb

So you can't run PCSX2 on a first gen Core i7?

ALSO: According to the so called "official PCSX2 benchmark" thread, the i7 920 (which has a slightly worse single core performance clock for clock with the X5650), at 4Ghz is running the benchmark at 72.80FPS on Final Fantasy X, getting similar/better performance than a FX-8350 running at 4.7 Ghz...

Is it that bad? The numbers look pretty okay here...

Bad idea. I had the i7-920 myself and I suffered from some pretty major slowdowns on a variety of games.

I have no idea why you would want to fall back to such a CPU from an i5-4690. The 4690 will outperform the i7-920 in anything it does. That includes video editing.
AMD Ryzen 5 3600 @ 3.60~4.20 GHz | Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3200
MSI GeForce GTX 1660 Super @ 6 GB | Samsung 980 1TB | Windows 10 Pro x64 (22H2)

He wants a 6 core xeon that he can OC based on the same OC.

aren't xeons meant to be server-specific solutions and not for actual desktops?

I was referring to video editing usage, pretty sure an OC'd FX 6300 is, when it comes to multithreaded programs, on par than that Xeon and likely cheaper. FX 83XX are just 63XX +2 cores

Nowhere near mate.

X5650 - http://hwbot.org/image/1425452.jpg encoding - 120 seconds @4.1Ghz

FX 6300 - http://hwbot.org/image/1335817.jpg encoding - 159 @5.1Ghz

All I asked was for pcsx2 performance, I know my hardware, don't chu worry bout it c:

The X58 platform is not your regular 1150/1155, it belongs to the X79 family, enthusiast grade material, so server sockets usually are 2011 and back then 1366, good boards from good manufacturers like Asus, Gigabyte, MSI, are able to run these processors because the boards qualify for it, and so are enable to run them and overclock them as the X versions of Xeon processors are unlocked, much like the K series and FX series from AMD.

Did you run the 920 overclocked? If so, at what speeds?

Also I did specify why I wanted to make this change, my current i5 in an encoding benchmark, scores 190 seconds, the X5650 scores 120 seconds, and that might not be a lot but if you add up those seconds when rendering 10-15 minute videos, it does make a difference and I've seen people take these in 2015 and they are very capable of rendering as fast if not as fast as a 4770K, look it up, it's a very popular thing to do among enthusiasts.
