Help optimizing PCSX2 for Kingdom Hearts.
#1
Game: Kingdom Hearts

Specs:
Pentium D @ 2.8Ghz
4GB RAM
ATI HD4560 512MB VRAM

I have 25-40fps in cutscenes and ~30fps in gameplay, unless I'm facing a corner, where I can go to 45fps. This causes a severe (i'd say half) slowdown. Is there anything I can do more to put this into a playable state. Also, KH and KH2 are about the only games that interest me. Here are my settings. (I've fiddled with many settings but I can't get more than ~5fps difference if I do).

Settings:
Framelimiter ON
Speedhacks ON: (The three recommended + mVU Block Hack, EE Cyclerate 2, VU Cyclesteal 1)´
Gamefixes OFF
GS Plugin (SSE2):
Renderer: DX10 Hardware (tried DX9 also, no change)
Interlacing: None
Resolution: Custom 640x480 (tried many, including native, very mild performance changes)
Texture Filtering OFF
8-bit textures OFF
Logarithmic Z ON (grayed out)
Alpha correction OFF (grayed out)

All the other setting defaults.

I would really appreciate if you could give me any help. Thanks.

Your processor is weak, mostly thanks to it's age (5+ years old).

Your GPU is quite questionable,
and if any performance gain occured from lowering the resolution,
odds are it's limiting you, too.

My initial impression of your system is that it is too weak to expect more from it.
If that's all the farther low res and Speedhacks gets you,
then I find my impression correct.

Sorry, but you'll need a faster system for faster PCSX2.

Ok, thanks. Apart from lowering the resolution, are there any tweaks you can make to raise FPS, reducing graphic fidelity?

Well, I guess I could list some things you could try.
You might wanna try each one at a time.
If something doesn't clearly help, keep it disabled,
since there's no telling if it will break something later in the game.
  • In the EE and VU tabs of Emulation Settings, try changing clamping to "None", or maybe round made to "Nearest".
  • Also in the VU tab, try setting the VU1 recompiler to "superVU1".
  • In the GS plugin setting, try a custom res below native (384x384).
  • Also, try "Allow 8-bit textures".
  • There are hidden hack for GSdx, and a little skipdraw could help some situations.
  • You could also try out the latest work-in-progress build of PCSX2 through the SVN downloads. The hidden GSdx hacks are a lot less hidden in recent revision.
Any of this could break some emulation.
Just worth trying if you're desperate.
I usually just go back to my PS2 if I really wanna play a troubled game.

I can play this x6 native without any problems full 60fps ntsc version.
But on very odd ocassions in the middle of cut scenes it just drops in frame rate dramatically for a few moments and then back to normal again. It happens with almost all cut scenes.
Doesn't matter if it's x1 native or x6, it's very strange.
Using one of the latest SVN builds - Revision 5130. Wonder what it could be??

Might try a different revision in case the one I'm using is 'broken'.

Alienware m18x (space black anodized aluminum):
Intel® Core™ i7 2920XM @ 4.0GHz
x2/Dual 2GB GDDR5 AMD Radeon™ HD 6990M - AMD CrossFireX
Corsair Force GT 240GB SSD
Kingston HyperX 16GB memory @ 1600mhz
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

You are probably running the game from the dvd disc instead of an iso image

I have a 5$ computer from a yard sale and these settings keep FFXII and most other games at a constant 30-40fps, and in less crowded ares full 60fps+ *dual-boot xp pro sp3 and results are same*

this helps speed too
If you have usb flash drives get Ebooster. the reviews are true its a over 9000 times better than readyboost. i run itunes and firefox and sometimes mixcraft and pcsx2 still runs about 30fps never lower than 25. It's quite amazing.

*phewww* I'm often frightened by message boards! Thank you and I'm glad my first post might help someone. And it was exhausting screen capping, uploading to flickr, than finding the static url for the images etc. Thank god I didn't post any of my funnysquirrelpics though lmao

I was gonna be selfish and post this all to my blog and link to it but then I realized that would make me a tool haha. thanks again. and to the OP and anyone else, please let me know if this helps or worsens your speed. And I personally use the tff weave interlacing but since none is faster I posted that option.
