How high internal res in OGL to match DX?
#1
Hey there. I havent been updating my pcsx2 in a while, noticed some work on OGL so decided to give it a try..
After some preliminary test and comparison i have noticed quite a gap in quality graphics.
OGL on max cant seem to match dx on lower settings, or am i missing something?

This is dx with x4 internal res

and this is OGL with x8

I tried FXAA for ogl ,msa is greyed cant turn it on ,tried other combinations but quality is still very sharp and lacks alising on textures..
Pay attention to Fran's arms and edges on blue save point behind.

Any suggestions?

There shouldn't be any extra aliasing issues with ogl rather than dx. Most of the work done is in regards to ogl is compatibility; getting messed up or missing graphics working. Less so on making things look better.
It's also hard to tell from the jpg compression.

Ogl does support trillinear texture filtering in the hacks menu. Try that.

if you have msaa enabled in dx and not in opengl you'll need to multiply the internal res for that additional amount of anti-aliasing (at least for geometry) so for dx 2x + 4xMSAA, for that level of quality you would need 8x res in opengl (but everything else would be higher res too, not just geometry).

You can't have

Extra resolution (upscaling + MSAA) + GS emulation accuracy + 60 fps

Some compromise need to be done.

If you want true 4K game, you should at recent title not 20 years old oldies

i wasnt really asking for 4k gaming.. i was merely pointing out on ugly textures in ogl.. i am satisfied that i can reach smooth textures without sharp edges in dx, but with all ogl improvements i was kinda expecting to reach the same level of quality.

As it stands now, maybe add more (higher) scaling options for OGL ..? x24 ? Smile

You have custom internal resolution so you have access to x24 or whatever you want.

15,360 x 11,520 is 24x 640x480 which is only around 16k resolution, but if you have the hardware to run it you can run 24x internal resolution.

Have any changes to texture filtering been made on OGL but not DX? If you're saying the textures don't look as good then my hunch would be on a change to texture filtering. Maybe DX doesn't handle bilinear as well and ends up being more pixelated (so "sharper" but edges won't have as much blending in them)?

I don't know if it was fixed. But dx wrongly uses the hardware filtering (with aniso) whereas gl emulate correct GS filtering for egion clamping. I know it impacts at least one FF game
