Yeah they "sing" in each battle, that's how they attack(front line characters are weak and in battle their main purpose is the protect the girl), however, no actual lyrical songs play except for very special battles. Ar tonelico 1 has a simple turn based system, Ar tonelico 2 has a really fun rhythm based system, Ar tonelico 3 has a horrible real time battle system.
