I tried this new beta version and got an error upon just running it.

I just tried a different graphics plugin (ZeroGS 0.97.1) and it eliminated the error about wrong shader version, but I still get the error "Unhandled or unrecoverable exception occured, with the message: The GS plugin failed to open/initialize"

It seems that this emulator is just so buggy it won't even work, with ANYTHING! I'm surprised there is even a compatibility list. I mean to know a game is compatible you have to play it, but how do you play it on an emulator that doesn't even freaking work!? I mean these errors I'm getting are ones I'm still getting on the NON-beta version after I downgraded to the latest release version (not beta version).

Really I'm wondering if I can EVER get this emulator working.

You need to update brain.dll. This will helps for sure.

Whenever I load a game (I've tried 2 different games) it first gives me some stupid error about only supporting shader version 1.4 and the selected shader is 2.0 (as if I could somehow select a different shader version, but I don't even know what a shader is).

Uhm so what is your specs, specially graphics card? The emu needs at least pixel shaders 2.0 to work, if you dont have that you can forget about it.

Pixel Shaders are a kind of "program" that runs in your GPU (well or basically graphics card) and is used to calculate effects and like graphics rendered easily against a pure CPU rendering which is much much slower. Almost any kind of modern graphics card has at least pixel shaders 2.0 and I'm sure you can find a much better explanation if you use a search engine about it.

The thousands of people running it would say otherwise, if you dont have the hardware for it of course it will fail.

is "shaders 2.0" a hardware thing or a software drivers thing?

Sorry I edited the post a bit, it's a hardware thing specifically your graphics card.

Kigaruna: That really isn't helpful at all. There isn't any reason to insult another user.

After I read his post #11, I realized that he deserves it.

probably because you either forgot to install the visual c++ 2008 sp1 redist, visual c++ 2010 beta redist or the march '09 directx redist.

let the mods/admins decide that. use the report button, if you think something deserves a closer look by the mods/admins. insulting someone, even as a reply to an insult, might net you a warning, too.

Yeah, it was that visual c++ 2010 beta that was causing the issue.

http://pcsx2.dyndns.org/index.php#GSdx Maybe it will fix videogamer555 problem the link is at the top right floppydisk picture.
