Intel Xeon X5470 Vs. X5460?
#1
I wan't to upgrade my current Xeon E5345 to one that can emulate, mostly without slowdown. The X5470 runs at 3.33 GHz, but costs $45 per CPU, meaning total cost would be $90 dollars. Alternatively, the X5460 costs only $25 dollars. The only difference from the X5470 is that it runs at 3.16 GHz. So my question is, should I pay $90 dollars for 3.3 GHz, or should I opt for the cheaper route, at 3.16 GHz?

I have X5450 on my other PC, I don't see the point of getting x5470. I overclocked x5450 to 4ghz and its been running nice and cool for 2 years on air.

But with that said, X5450 misses some instructions that newer CPUs have that don't let PCSX2 work right. I tried Gran Turismo 4 and could never get it to run right.

This is the problem I had, it might have been that I didn't update my bios, I have't tried using it after I did update. Maybe you will have better luck. Also let me know if you need the cpu adapter. I have some extras I believe.

I'll be honest with you, I am unsure if either of those chips will run "without slowdown". For the majority of games on PCSX2, a STP of 1600-1800 is recommended. Your current Xeon E5345 has an STP of 915. The X5460 has an STP of 1345, and the X5470 has an STP of 1395. If those are your only 3 choices I would take the X5470 as it has the highest STP and frequency, but just know you may not get the results you are looking for Tongue

Unfortunately, OCing is not an option. My budget is somewhat limited, since I'll also be buying a $120 dollar graphics card for other games. I can ignore minor slowdown if it's like 90% in somewhat-intensive 3D games such as 007 From Russia With Love. For me, $40 dollars extra is a big difference, just for 170MHz more than the $50 dollar option. Really all I'm wondering is what will the performance be with a X5470 in games like the one said above, and will the performance be majorly different between that and the X5460.

That might be a struggle. What speeds do you get with your current CPU with the MTVU speedhack on?

With MTVU, I get around 65%-80%.
Is there any possible way to allow pcsx2 to use all 8 total cores?

Again it really depends on the games the OP is looking to play, not all of them take to MTVU. Given his limited budget and your input I would assume the x5460 would be ok, the difference between the 2 is barely noticeable. And only with software mode does it use more cores (minus MTVU when usable), and it really isn't 8 cores it's 4 with hyperthreading which doesn't quite work the same Tongue

About that... I actually have two Xeons to replace (plus no hyperthreading support on this series), hence the doubled price. So my final budget is two Xeon X5460's for $50 dollars, and a Radeon R7 250E for $100 dollars.

You might want to consider an Nvidia GPU alternative if PCSX2 is important to you. AMD cards are fine, but don't perform as well with PCSX2's OpenGL Hardware Renderer, which is more accurate than DX11.

For an extra 20 bucks you could grab a gtx 750ti Smile
