try if checking "logarithmic z" helps, the texture glitches are dx9 specific, afaik. get the win7 rc, now

the release client of windows7, can be used for free and without any limitations until march '10. it is not the final release of it, but many report it to be a very stable platform already (well, win7 is more or less a bigger service pack for vista imo )

That destroyed my harddrive last time that I installed win7.

hm, it destroyed your hard-drive? like damaging it physically? if your hdd died after you installed win7, chances are that it already was dying a slow death. the malfunction of a hard-drive rarely happens instantly (unless you throw it out of the window, of course ), it either develops more and more defective sectors or it gets slower and slower, while becoming louder and louder at the same time.

It physically damaged it, but HP sent me a new one so I'm good.

well, i'm unable to prove the opposite, of course. but it's much more likely that it would have malfunctioned anyway, even without the installation of win7. the real danger for the health of your hdd is not the operating system, it's software constantly accessing it, like bittorrent clients or the windows/google search indexer. paired with mediocre or worse cooling they can greatly reduce the lifespan of your drives.
