Manual Gamepad Configuration?

I'm wondering if there's a way to manually put in the control configuration for a gamepad without using the built-in system. The default gamepad plugin is super duper unbelievably finnicky and I just cannot get the analog stick control sets to register properly.

EDIT: I'm using a SteelSeries 3GC gamepad, windows 7 build of PCSX2.

What would really be perfect would be a series of dropdown boxes. One for the gamepad button, and one for what that actually translates to from the PC's end.
