Metal Gear Solid 3 - Error's
#1
Hello there,
I was wondering if I may find help here. I've been running a lot of games and they run really smoothly 95-100% with my system/setup. Just Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. It runs smoothly till the first People arrive in the screen - the first "in cockpit" scene from the intro. I get like green or blue bar's in my screen and my cpu goes up to 99% - I for myself cant not speak of a good knowledge about the emu and settings so I hope this can be fixed with one or two changes cause I really'd like to run this smoothly =)
I've uploaded some screens so you can get a better view of what I'm talking about:

My Computer is:
AMD Phenom™ II X3 720 Processor 2.80 GHz
4,00 GB 1066 MHz RAM
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260-216 896 MB
Running on Vista Ultimate 32-Bit

thanks in advance,
Ilyu

Update to the latest beta and update GSdx to the latest revision and that might fix your problem.

the 99% is not your total cpu load, it's the cpu usage of gsdx Wink 99% means that your cpu is desperately trying to process the vast amounts of gfx data and disregards other parts of pcsx2, that's why it slows down so much. but it's absolutely normal, on my system with all speedhacks it still drops to 30-40 fps during those in plane shots. MGS3 is together with SotC the most demanding game currently compatible with pcsx2, no config will make it run smoothly on our rigs. but as aemony already stated, try the latest betas. then activate all speedhacks, set gsdx to native and make sure you run the game from your hdd with linuz iso.

Uh not quite. The % CPU usage in the GSdx window shows the usage of the thread/core dedicated to the GS so if it is anything above 90% it means your graphics card is the bottleneck, while the rest of the emulator waits for it to process the data it is given. So turning down the internal resolution or turning off filtering should help there.

aha, so high percentages mean that the cpu is in fact idling because the gpu is not fast enough? interesting, always understood this number as the "share" of all cpu cycles, that are allocated for the emulation of the gs. so, basically, a faster gpu would help to avoid such higher percentages?

Indeed, except if you are hitting a GSdx bug where virtually no gfx card is enough to cope with

hm, really sick, if you think about it. even his nvidia geforce gtx 260 gets demoted to a "bottleneck" when it comes to metal gear solid 3 Sad

So a graphics card does make a big difference after all if i am hearing you guys correctly. Maybe i should upgrade my 8800GT ?

If you want to play very demanding games like MGS3 then you should consider upgrading it... otherwise that GPU will do well on the majority of games

In some areas of MGS3 the cpu goes to 99% and i get 1 fps so i am hoping a graphics upgrade will fix it and not hit that GSdx bug Bositman was talking about.
