Mushihimesama - missing slowdown?
#1
Hi,

Years ago I played Mushihimesama on my now long dead Japanese ps2. I picked up the emulator to play it again. It looks and sounds perfect but the speed is crazy. Almost all the programmed slow down seams to be missing? Last stage plays at full speed all the way through except for bullet cancelling moments which is kind of hilarious.

I checked on you tube to see if it was my imagination but all the arrange mode videos i watched (mode i have been playing) show slow down. It appears on bosses as well as stages. The last pattern on 4th boss normally slows down but on pscx2 it runs at full speed.

Is anyone able to help. Is there a special set up to get the slowdowns to appear or am i missing something in the game after all these years?

you can limit the fps by unchecking disable framelimiting in the GS section of emulation settings.

Frame rate is not the issue. I want the game to run at 60fps.

The game has in build slow down during the more hectic parts. So its an artificial slowdown (intentional by the developers) and not related to overall frame rate as far as I know.

please provide a screenshot of your PCSX2 settings and Emulog. This game is known to be demanding even on the higher end processors. It's quite weird that you get speed ups on intentional slow down parts.

Let me know if this is was not the log you were after. I will take pictures of settings tomorrow about to head to bed. All settings are default.

Its not that the game is speeding up or slowing down. Its hard to explain without I guess knowing the game. The game has an inbuilt speed that is completely different to fps.

On PS2 hardware this game slows down as it does on the original arcade machine. Its programmed in to the game.

This is a video of last stage mini boss (PS2 version). The first few patterns run at normal speed then you get ones where the game fluctuates in speed which is intentional.

There is a lot of intentional slow down in this stage which isn't showing when I play it on psxc2. It runs 100% speed almost all the way through the game except for bullet canceling moments.

do you have another PS2 ? since, your current BIOS version is known to have some problems on pcsx2.

I think the 'slowdowns' are just lag from the PS2/arcade limitations.

Grandia 2 had the same issue when you got into towns where you would experience slowdowns like that. Notice how in that video it only happens when there's crapton of bullets on screen. Also only when enemies blow up (so basically extra animations taking place)

PCSX2 makes Grandia 2 run at full speed in town without slowdowns. It's basically the same for this game.

Could be wrong though, maybe it is intentional in this game. I never really paid much attention to it.

Yeah, it's definitely intentional. The 360 version is the same. You can tell by watching that video. Some of those patterns would be impossible to get through at full speed.

This is a pretty interesting bug, though.

Typical timing issue or? I don't know what it does but one can check the manual gamefix 'ee timing hack '...

If you want to make it slow down you can press <tab> as well and press it again if you want to have normal speed. It will half the fps by default.

All good. Was just curious if it was a known issue and there was a solution. I recommended this game to a friend, both of us in to these types of games. He was complaining about the difficulty. When I saw him playing I laughed.

I recorded a play though on arrange, very much winging it with a bit of muscle memory going on. It has all stages and bosses and some of the extra boss unique to this and ultra mode. You cannot continue in this mode so I did not get the final pattern but the rest is there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cmV58xi5KTg

Looking at it all the bullet canceling slow down seams to be in place but the general slow down is very muted. If you put the last stage in my video against the video i linked earlier you will see I have reached and killed mid boss well before the game on real hardware. It is always hard to say with these games. Will leave it with you guys.

I tried the ee timing hack and a different bios. No change that I noticed.

If it does turn out to be a bug and you fix it make sure to leave a way to play it like this. It is super fun.
