Need help in optimizing configuration for FF12

Im referring to the actual CPU usage that both task manager and my G15v2 shows ( Sir Real LCD plug in ) i tried 2560x2560 internal res but it would slow down on some parts but not as slow as the latest official version drops.

EDIT:

How do i enable MSAA via the .ini , add a value on the aa1=0 ?

no the entry is "msaa=x" where x can be 0, 2, 4 or 8. aa1 is the aa filter for the software mode afaik.

setting it to msaa=2 makes the game crawl to a stop, it doesnt go away even if i remove the msaa option and reboot the pc.

you mean, the fps don't go up again, even if you set it to msaa=0? well, try deleting the ini file and reconfigure gsdx without adding msaa, or try an older revision (pre 159x i think) which doesn't have this option.

I can recreate the bug w/o using MSAA option, ill just bump up the internal resolution to 4096x4096 and goto an area/scene that drops the fps down to the 20's , totally close and exit the emulator and run it again with 1024x1024 and its still crawling. Rebooting the computer solves the issue though, Im not sure what to make of this.

I've been playing with FF12 for sometime now and I noticed that DX9 hardware mode gives the best possible performance even with Vsync enabled. DX10 hardware mode slows down quite a lot when going into full screen ( having the window maximized doesnt affect it though, also having vertical sync really cripples the DX10 renderer.

EDIT:

I noticed that in some scenes the CPU % on the title bar goes down to like 85% usage.. does that mean i have like 15% free cycles for that scene ?

Also im getting some random program crash from PCSX2 may it be the latest beta or the latest officials, i havent enabled any speedhacks or ticked any other options aside from the graphics renderer config, could it be a compatibility with Win7 ?

hm, that's weird. perhaps it really is a win7 problem, e.g. with the graphics card drivers. it's still beta after all. do you have a dual boot system with a winxp or vista to compare? and yes, sometimes dx9 can be faster, depends on many factors like game, drivers and hardware, i guess. i don't really understand what you mean with "free cycles", free for what?

Could be a Win7 or driver problem ( using Windows 7 Ultimate RTM and 190.58 drivers ) I already nuked my Vista install when the final build for 7 came out.

I was referring to the % cpu usage as free cycles, like on the screenshot its 21% so that means 78% free cpu cycles on the given scene. Having Vsync always caps it at 99% though. Im using 2048x2048 as the internal resolution.

I updated the GSdx to r1600 and i dont need to reboot the machine anymore as i previously did.

well, 21% means, that the gs thread and with it the core reserved for it works at 21% load, meaning that your gpu has no problems to finish its emulation tasks in time. when it goes up to 99%, then your gpu can't keep up with the rest of the emuation, thus forcing your cpu to idle and lowering your fps. though i have no idea why vsync caps it at 99%. and, wow, you have some trust in the stability of new windows operating systems Laugh i wouldn't even consider a windows with two service packs to be a final build Wink

Thanks for the very informative explanation. I've been using Vista SP1 since it came out and had zero stability issues with it on my programs and hardware, since 7 is made on the same Kernel and a little bit improved so i gave it a shot and it even works better than vista i believe.

I've been playing around with the internal resolution at 2048x2048 the given scene in FF12 is around 20-25% usage bumping the resolution to just 2300x2300 makes it go 99%

Also i notice a small input delay with FF12, the frame rate is running at 99-100% though.. is this normal for the emulator or do i need to set up something to improve it ? analog stick response time is spot on though.

well, you might try another pad plugin, or try increasing the sensitivity of the lagging buttons in the lilypad config. i've never experenced this, though, so no idea if that really helps. without any speed hacks or frame skipping enabled there should be virtually no input delay at all.
