could be a regression according to compatibility list.
can you try older revisions ? just to determine when it started to crash

I'm quite new to Linux. I don't know how to install older versions, I just used the PPA from here

Will you able to install the debug symbol and attach a debugger to generate a backtrace (there are a couple of info in the previous thread)

Unfortunately I don't know how to install pcsx2-dbg
It's only available on Debian Stretch and Debian Sid. I am on Debian Jessie

I downloaded the .deb for it and tried to install it with gdebi but I get this error

The dbg symbol must be included in the ppa normally.

Ok, I'm not sure what to do next. Also, the debugger freezes when the game freezes

Not this debugger (which is used to debug PS2 game itself) but a standard debugger like gdb. You need to attach it when the pop up assertion appears.
