PCSX2 Constantly Running At 20fps
#1
Hi all,

I bought me last week a HP Pavilion 15-e009ax, specifically to play PCSX2. It has AMD Radeon dedicated 1GB graphics, and I upgraded it to have 6GB RAM now. Yet, when I downloaded Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier, although the cutscenes are played at full speed, the gameplay is wont go past 20fps and occasionally goes to 30fps very briefly when an event happens out of my control like a mini-cutscene. Here are my specs:

Is my laptop not sufficient enough and needs to be upgraded with better parts? because I'm willing to do so, since I'm a learning PC/Laptop Modder. Or is it current settings I have?

That laptop is based on an AMD A6-5200 APU, it's a low power SOC not enough powerful for PCSX2 emulation, I'm also quite sure that it's soldered on the motherboard, so you cannot upgrade it with a better APU. The only thing you can try is using some speedhack, especially the MTVU (you have a quad core), but I doubt you'll be able to get decent speed, for the GSDx plugin, use native resolution.

AMD is not good for pcsx2 overall. Unless you have something like an 8 core bulldozer overclocked or something else really, expensive or REALLY overclocked, your out of luck.

Actually one of the latest AMD CPU/APU with at least 4 core and a bit more than 3GHz is good enough for many games, not the most heavy of course. 8 cores except for software rendering are completely useless in PCSX2.

In this case unfortunately we are talking about the low-end of the AMD APUs for notebook, thus it's obvious that is not enough for PCSX2, as for Intel Atom/Celeron CPUs.

Next time you buy something "specifically", do a bit of reseach on what it's for first. ;P

PCSX2 favors a high clockrate from the CPU. Good per-clock performance can help compensate this, but AMD is not the choice manufacturer for that.
