I was never able to run games on linux from my DVDs, you'll have to create an iso of them.
Athlon II x2 245 (@3.6Ghz), 6gb DDR3 1333, GeForce GTS250 2gb Ram, Linux Mint 12 32bit.

Any clues on how to detect the DVDs in general? I mean on Windows I just pop it in and it shows the DVD but on Linux it's like there's nothing inside the tray.

What distro are you using? It works fine for me.

the CDVDlinuz (EFP polling CDVD driver) plugin works alright for playing from discs in linux.

strange though, how it isn't built along with everything else through CMake; I had to use its own makefile.

Arch Linux but it didn't detect it on Gentoo or Ubuntu when I used those two either.

Then there's something wrong on the hardware side, my system detects every single disc I insert on my dvd drives and I've used Ubuntu, Arch, Fedora, Gentoo and openSUSE.

patrickdinh: Thanks for the tip, I'm gonna give it a try!
