As far as I know it has a very minor performance hit, barely noticeable, if noticeable at all.

yes it's more load on your computer, you have to process around 33% more data.

its not that much at all. You are rendering 33% more scene but that doesn't directly translate to 33% more work.

Some people use the patches through gameshark etc on real PS2, and have reported not much slowdown.

This. It really differs for every game. Some games render a lot off-screen, while others don't (these ones are more suspectible to needing render fixes).

The widescreen patches, at least 95% of them, are safe. Even if there is an FPS drop, I doubt 16:9 would cause a huge difference. It's not like a 4:3 game at 60fps would drop to 40 in 16:9, it would be more around 56 or 57 if such a thing ever happened.

In games with lots of 3d element I had up to 15 fps difference, though I had to go up to 4x scaling so I play ws patched games normally at 3 times and non patched ones at 4 times

of course if you could play at 120 fps you won't get slowdowns on the 60fps limit but if you push it to the limit and only get 60fps without limit you will most likely see some slowdown.

I have yet to have a widescreen patch to work. I really don't know why they don't work for me.
