The SW renderer will use the use the GPU that is connected to your screen to display a nice picture :p PCSX2 isn't aware if the said GPU is integrated or not. Lots of people still don't have an (useless) iGPU.

Wait, then what's the difference between hardware mode and software mode? Obviously a GPU would still be used to interface with the screen.

Hardware mode Has the GPU doing the graphical calculations the PS2 graphics processor would have been doing (translated into something it understands).

Software mode has the CPU doing those calculations and telling the GPU "draw this".
