Random freezing problem
#1
I've just discovered PCSX2 this very day and am pleased to say it runs pretty well. I'm getting a solid 60 fps while playing Gran Turismo 4 but have had problems with seemingly random freezing of the emulator. Everything stops with the CPU usage droping down to zero in the task manager, then after some amount of time, it all springs back in to life.

It kind of makes getting round the track a bit difficult.

Is there some setting I can fiddle with that'll cure this?

  • The version of PCSX2 you are using.
  • Any non default settings you are using.
  • What games you are trying to play and if you are playing them from ISO or DVD.

Thank You.

Sorry dude, I should probably have gave a bit more detail in my first post.

My CPU is a 2500K o/c'd at 4.5ghz. 16gb RAM in an ASUS P8P67 board running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

My graphics board is a stoneage GeForce 7950GT that's rapidly approaching its seventh birthday Blush

It's the 1.0.0 version Windows binary: pcsx2-r5350.exe with an ISO DVD image of the USA GT4 game and scph39001.bin BIOS file.

As for settings, i've only changed a couple of things. I've set a 2x size display window and enabled the MTVU Multi-Threaded microVU1 option though turning that one off didn't make any difference. I think everything else is left at the default settings.

Is this happening only for a sec while the camera fades out on replays? I've seen this happening with this game when you are not using 480p setting during replays.

If it more of a timing thing, you may want to keep an eye on your CPU and GPU temps or make sure they arent having some sort of throttling issue.

No dude, it's happening at random times, during gameplay or in the menus, anytime really. Sometimes only for a split second and other times freezing solid for several seconds before it comes back to life. CPU and GPU temps are both fine.

I've been playing for a couple of hours today and it's been OK pretty much all the way through, it's only just happened a couple of times in the last few minutes.

I'm going to try the latest version and see if it makes any difference, or not.

Been doing some more testing and the newest .EXE seems to be even worse than the 1.0.0 version.

Leaving GT4 playing a replay and watching it for a minute, i've noticed that when it freezes, the GS: meter in the title bar has sometimes shot right up to 100%. Then all the values drop to zero and after some time everything starts up again.

At other times, all the meters drop to zero then it starts up again, as normal.

Has anybody else noticed this?

When you say temps are OK, what are they exactly under load for the CPU and GPU?

Also with your overclock, did you disable the energy saving options?

When running the emulator, RealTemp shows it usually around about 40c. Occasionally nudging up towards 50c so i'd say 45c was the average. As far as the graphics board goes, i've no idea what the temps are. I can't hear the fan at all so i'd guess it's not an issue. Speedtstep is enabled.

I've just had a couple of hours long session and it's been running without error today. I haven't changed any settings so who the hell knows what's going on. I guess i'll just have to live with it for now and wait to see if any later version fixes it.
