For me, with a recent SVN amd using lilypad with controller set as guitar and frets mapped to keyboard 1,2,3,4,5 and strum to shift, the game plays fine.

Can you set it up to work like Guitar Hero does?

I play that and don't have to hit the strum bar (whatever key you have it mapped to) in conjunction with the fret buttons...

In Rock Band, it's sorta hard to play with having to do both of those in combination...
