MSAA only up-scales the depth buffer. And it can be done on Dx because depth effect aren't emulated. Anyway, I think it would better to compare.
Native (or 2x Upscaling) and 16x MSAA versus 4x upscaling.

Technically Native + 16x MSAA shouldn't suffer of upscaling artifact.

I just tried with 2x salling and there is almost no difference in vram usage between native and 2x with 16xmsaa...the fps indicator is jumping between values too much to tell if there is a fps loss(180-210)
