So either this game is using some weird type of draw that NVIDIA cards are better at or it's something with GSdx. Or both. Bositman's test entry on the wiki says that the game is slow in hardware mode do to a GSdx limitation, so there's that. Bosit if you're reading this, could you tell us what limitation it is? The wiki makes no mention of it, it just says that the game is GPU-heavy.

It used to require DX9 HW to work fast in HW mode, I think this got better at some point. This particular game uses some weird drawing technique and i *think* radeon cards had issues with it, so that would explain it for you

Yeah it looks like you're right. Does anyone know of someone with an AMD card that can test performance for this game to confirm it's not just me?

So...the GSdx limitation was that you needed it to run on D3D9 for it to not be slow in hardware mode? For me even in D3D9 it pins the ***** out of my card. I get better performance, but still nowhere near full speed/60FPS. :-\

So...why isn't the 'Switch to GSdx software rendering when an FMV plays' gamefix applied automatically to this game? I don't see it causing any issues in the game. If that's the case, someone needs to edit the GameIndex.dbf file.

is software mode needed to play the FMV's properly ?

Yes. If not, they flicker like crazy. Even the intro logos when you first start the game are like that.

care to provide the serial number ? and, there are no games using the FMVinSoftwareHack in the GameIndex.dbf. I wonder why ?

It's on the wiki:
http://wiki.pcsx2.net/index.php/Shadow_Hearts

Nice observation of the GameIndex.dbf file though. According to the beginning of the file, only Game Fixes 1-13 are defined. 14-16 (the FMV fix is #15) are missing completely. I wonder what it would take to add them in. Any ideas avih?

The variable for the gamefix is FMVinSoftwareHack according to the config header file. I'll try sending a PR and hope it works, nobbs also asked me to add the hack for kingdom hearts, It's worth a try.

btw, the Goemon fix is not defined but, it's used for the game.

Sweet, thanks. While you're at it, add Compat = 5 to FFXII Collector's Edition. It's SLUS-21475.
