Soul Calibur 3 Half-Screen missing
#1
Hi i looked around the forums and even went and tried some of the older builds based on what versions seemed to work in the past, but for the life of me i can't get Soul Calibur 3 to work right with custom high resolution...

Rig:
CPU: AMD FX 4300 @4.6 Ghz
RAM: Kingston 1333 Mhz DDR3
GPU: ATi Radeon 6850 1 Gb GDDR5

Game: Soul Calibur 3 (SCES_533.12) @PAL

Used the default PCSX2 settings For the based emulator and as far as GSDX goes, i tried the default DX 11 and DX9 settings with the following custom resolutions: 1200X1200, 1200X1600, 1080X1920. I also tried activating and deactivating 8 bit textures and various HW Hacks combos with no success. I have this problem on pretty much all PCSX2 versions i tried (even newer Orphis builds).

I also attached a screenshot with the problem, first screen is if i use 1200X1600 second one is if i use 1200X1200.

Hmmm not having issues here with the game. This is on PCSX2 GIT 1.3.0-704

I started the game in PAL60/60HZ mode if that makes any difference. (When it prompts you for 50 or 60).

PCSX2 Settings:

[Edit]
And does it work in Native res?

[Offtopic] Hi strike, fancy seeing you here. ;D

[Edit 2]
I can reproduce this issue by choosing PAL50/50HZ at the prompt when you first load the game. Choosing PAL60/60HZ seems to fix it over here.

This screen was taken with PAL50/50HZ:

Here it is with PAL60/60HZ:

AMD Ryzen 5 3600 @ 3.60~4.20 GHz | Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3200

does pcsx2 recognize if you change the framerate in the game? I guess if it is ntsc it will run at 60Hz if it is pal it will run at 50Hz. If you now run the ntsc version at game internal 50 Hz and pcsx2 related 60Hz I would expect problems like this...

Can you look into the emulog what is written as base framerate while you test both versions?

Edit: wait - now I see you have both pal versions. Then it is interesting that PAL50 doesn't work....

Hi Ryudo ^^, well i thought this was the best place for support and so far it has really been quite helpful in more ways then i expected XD, anyway back to the topic at hand:

Are you kidding me ? oO I can't believe it, it was because i choose 50Hz, thank you, using 60Hz fixed the problem, its perfect now. Still i can't believe the whole game broke like that cause of the Hz...

Thank you all for the support given!

For the PAL60/60Hz it seems to change the mode to NTSC. Somehow it must be breaking something for whatever reason when you choose PAL50/50Hz.
No idea how that works though. Maybe rama knows about this or Blyss.

Not me. If I had to guess, I'd say that the on the fly change screws up the sync of the screen. But I don't know how this stuff works.

Only thing I can think of is that when you choose PAL50/50Hz is that it somehow forces the change TWICE in PCSX2? So you're essentially going from PAL50 to PAL50. Because PCSX2 detects it's a PAL disc and already adjusts it, and then it gets another command via the game itself to change modes again? I don't know. Maybe that's why it's working correctly in PAL60, because it actually has to do a 'proper' change there.

I'm trying to think if there's more games that have the option of choosing PAL50/50Hz / PAL60/60Hz at the start to test this theory..

Would be interesting to know what happens on a PAL (Eurpope) bios.... Then you would have the opposite switching behavior and the other version should work better.

Also one could set the base framerate to 59,94 Hz for both regions... maybe the screen look fine with PAL50 (while running slightly to fast @ 60Hz)...

I have Soul Calibur III NTSC, but not PAL, nor a PAL bios.

I tried a lot of games with PAL 50 to 60 selectors and this is the only one that gave me this type of error, i guess that's why i didn't expect it to be that.

I'm using a PAL bios, my PS2 has 1.6 PAL bios version.
