Well if you think about it, 12 yrs ago building a desktop gaming PC from scratch cost about $2500, and only a small fraction of the cost was the video card. At the same time a new game console cost about $120-$150. Today a new gaming PC costs ~$1400, most of the cost being the video card and the power supply and cooling units needed to keep the video card happy (which is mostly useless to emulators). A $700 "desktop" PC is nearly as good of an option, as far as emulators are concerned. Meanwhile, today's consoles cost $300-$450.

It wasn't unreasonable to expect a $2500 machine to be able to emulate a $150 machine. Expecting a $700 machine to emulate a $350 machine is far less reasonable. And to add insult to injury, PC manufacturers make a profit on their parts. Console makers typically lose money on their consoles (so the real cost of a console would be like 25% more if they were operating in the same economic rules).
