Star Ocean 3 Disk 2 Swap Problems

I have two different issues with disk 2 it seems.

First issue is that while running the US version, the disk swap from 1 to 2 fails. Or rather, upon swapping disks I am left with a permanent black screen.

My workaround for this problem was to do a swap from US disk 1 to Euro disk 2 instead of US to US. This works, but now shortly following there is another fatal error where pcsx2 crashes after the cutscene with Biwig upon transporting back down to Elicoor to make the hostage exchange with the Vendeeni. Skipping the cutscene does not circumvent the problem, as it seems the issue occurs at conclusion of the cutscene in the transition before the battle starts.

A fix for either of these two issues (perhaps ideally the first issue) would be greatly appreciated.

For reference, I am running pcsx2 1.4.0 and haven't had any performance issues worth noting up to this point.

The game offer you to save before the disk change so save=>run the second disk like starting some other game=>load your save.

I have tried ( and re-tried ) that. Just to make sure, you're referring to 

( accepting the save option -> saving -> closing pcsx2 completely -> launch pcsx2 -> select disk 2 iso -> booting emulation -> hitting continue )

as opposed to hot swapping mid emulation like the game prompts for yes?

I have certainly tried that and the latter mentioned alternative without success. The fix you suggested in particular gives me the persistent black screen after hitting continue. That is, I do not get to pick which save file I want to continue.

No i havent, but unfortunately I no longer have the physical copies
