Summoner 2 (US): not playable, or just me?

I've been trying to play this game for a while, and it always freezes on text. has anyone else had this issue? (like in the beginning (where I'm at) when the pirates shout as they board the ship. (the short scene once they are on the ship)

Indeed the original summoner also now works when before it would hang at the guy you had to talk to in the very beginning
