Tales of Rebirth [SLPS-25450] Random Black Screen Crash
#11
I can try to help but you need to send me a savestate right before the freeze point. So if there is a particular scene where it freezes every time then make a savestate right before that scene, 7zip it and send it to me.

I can make a savestate from right before it froze for me the last time, but the game freezes completely at random. Sometimes after one battle, sometimes after playing for about an hour. Sometimes it freezes after a scene change. Once it froze after an FMV. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to those freezes. Your best bet is to fight as much as possible and try to advance in the story. When I started a new game, the first freeze happened for me after a battle on the mountain (about 50 minutes into the game). The game will then just show a black screen with the music still playing.

Here's the savestate, but it might take a while before it crashes for you too:

EDIT:
Just tested it again, now it doesn't freeze anymore after the first battle, but did after a few more. It's completely random. Could Full or Fast Boot possibly have an influence here, too? I'm always using Fast Boot.

I can confirm that this black screen freeze occurs on my setup too.

Freeze is pretty rare, but I think it occurs when game switches (loads) between screens. Like after battle, location change and FMV.
It black screen froze on me when it should load first village. I tried 5 or more times and it did not freeze there again. He heh... well.
Game also froze on me when I pressed New Game! So it can happen pretty fast. I will include this freeze log, but I do not see any errors.
Hard to reproduce without longer testing, but possible within first 5 or so minutes in game. Just need to restart and play a little until it happens.

Game is technically playable, but it will hurt if it freezes after longer play before saving.

Can confirm again, I've kept experimenting with settings, but the freezes never let up. Actually, Tales of Destiny Remake (Not sure if only the Director's Cut version or the normal version, too) had a similar issue, freezes after battle and freezes after scene changes and for it, there has been a patch release. Maybe the Destiny patch could lead to a solution or at least a hint on why this is happening to Tales of Rebirth?

I have attached it. Once we started using this patch for Tales of Destiny, the freezes completely stopped.

Enabling manual game fix "fpu multiply hack for tales of destiny" makes any difference?

What does that game fix "FPU Multiply Hack - For Tales of Destiny" actually do?
I just used it without 8409FD51.pnach file hack FMV fix and FMV froze/hanged in Tales of Destiny. I didn't encounter any other bugs in this game so... Just wondering.

Regalia776 attached wrong .pnach file xD...
FMV freeze/hang fix code for Tales of Destiny is this:

8409FD51.pnach

gametitle=Tales of Destiny [Director's Cut] [NTSC-J]
comment=Tales of Destiny [Director's Cut] [NTSC-J] FMV Fix

Sorry for the very late reply. No it didn't make any difference, I had already tried that. Actually, that on its own didn't make any difference for Tales of Destiny either, it still kept freezing randomly. I am not sure what the hack itself is supposed to do.

FMVs in Tales of Destiny are problematic even with that patch, but the random freezes occurring in Tales of Destiny are fixed with it. I remember when we first tried to play Destiny R and after finishing the Tutorial on the airship, the game just froze without the patch, even when we skipped the FMV. I presume the issue with Destiny R and Tales of Rebirth is very similar, but I'm not a programmer at all, so I can only speculate. And the black screens are just way too random for me to make any sense of it. But they seem to mostly happen after battles, not after scene changes.
