Tales of Rebirth [SLPS-25450] Random Black Screen Crash
#1
Hello everyone,

the game is listed on the official wiki as playable:
https://wiki.pcsx2.net/Tales_of_Rebirth

That doesn't seem to be the case.
When I activate any kind of speedhack, the game won't even start. If I play the game without any speedhacks it randomly crashes after battles or (happened once) after FMVs and other talk sequences. It just goes to a black screen with the music continuing to play.

Tales of Destiny R: Director's Cut has the same issue, but there is a cheat file for it that makes it work without freezes. No such thing seems to exist for Tales of Rebirth. Does anyone have a fix for this issue?

My settings on PCSX2 1.4.0:

[Image: 2nlrbqc.png]

[Image: 244uwrk.png][Image: 2w7pt3m.png]
[Image: 2dgkklz.png]

As for my computer's specs (I'll take them from the emulator's console):

Code:
Host Machine Init:
Operating System =  Microsoft Windows 10 Home (build 17763), 64-bit
Physical RAM     =  16249 MB
CPU name         =  Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-3630QM CPU @ 2.40GHz
Vendor/Model     =  GenuineIntel (stepping 09)
CPU speed        =  2.394 ghz (8 logical threads)
x86PType         =  Standard OEM
x86Flags         =  bfebfbff 7fbae3bf
x86EFlags        =  28100000

x86 Features Detected:
SSE2.. SSE3.. SSSE3.. SSE4.1.. SSE4.2.. AVX

My graphics card is a Nvidia GTX 660M.

Thanks for any help.

1 - give latest git build a try
2 - moved away from bug reports since it implies the use of speedhacks to reproduce
3 - Does the game work without speedhacks ? if so, it's not a real issue since speedhacks are "hacks" and tend to make games less stable.
CPU : AMD Ryzen 7 3800X
Mobo : Asus PRIME B450-PLUS
GPU : NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070

As I mentioned, I run the game without any speedhacks and it crashes randomly. I just again turned off everything (Speedhacks, Gamefixes, Widescreen Patch) and the game froze on a black screen after battle after playing for about 45 minutes.

As you can see in this Bug Report, the issue seems to persist since 2009:
https://forums.pcsx2.net/Thread-Resolved...0#pid55960

The issue of the game being marked "Playable" seems to be that the tester didn't test the game long enough to encounter the crashes.

My bad, didn't get it correctly.
1 - give latest Git a try

Please post the contents of the emulog.txt file after the problem occurs. The file can be found in "My Documents\PCSX2\logs" for the installer version or in "PCSX2\logs" for the portable/binary version.

Please make sure to enclose your emulog in code tags like so (remove the empty space on the closing code tag!):

Will try the latest version, setting it up now. I should also mention that I dumped the ISO myself, but that shouldn't be an issue since the bug has been around for so long. The ISO is otherwise working perfectly fine.

Here's the emulog:

Also please install PCSX2 in another folder/drive then Program Files! Windows 7/8(.1)/10 has a permission bug still.

I would love to do that, but I bought the laptop pre-formatted and had already started installing all of my stuff once I noticed that the Program Files folder is problematic. Actually, the whole C: drive seems to be problematic on Windows 10. I wish I could go back to Windows 7, but I don't have an Installation disc for it.

But shouldn't running PCSX2 as administrator alleviate that issue? Because that's what I've been doing so far and it seems to work fine for e.g. Tales of the Abyss.

EDIT/UPDATE:

I've tested the game on the newest Git version (v.1.5.0-dev-2993) and the game at first didn't want to start without gamefixes and speedhacks. I then went into the settings and turned on "Preset - Safe (Default)" or something like this under the speedhacks settings in the lower left, after which it booted up. However, the game again froze, this time however right after the first battle. Maybe luckily for me, so I won't have to test another 50 minutes before it freezes.

Here is the emu log, I have already switched to the European Bios.
