While what willkuer said is true, I still want to stress that widescreen patches and cheats should be off for Valkyrie Profile 2. At the very minimum, it will reproducibly freeze the game at the beginning of the final boss fight, which is a common result of the game's anti-cheat protection kicking in. tri-Ace games are notorious for these kind of shenanigans.
I say at the minimum, because that's about as much as I tested it with patching on. Starting the game with patches on could potentially flag the save for the entire playthrough.
The game already has a built-in 16:9 mode. It's good enough for the potential hassle you're saving yourself.
