Why is PCSX2 Blurrier than any other Emu?
#1
Why is this emulator so blurry and what can I do about it? I use Dolphin, Project64, Epsxe, Snes9x, etc and this is the blurriest image I've seen aside from handheld emulators that scale up from 240x160. I set the internal renderer to 1080p, crank up aa, and all of the objects still have jagged edges as though they are rendered at 240p, there's insane amounts of aliasing, this happens in various games. I've seen a few threads on this, but the PCSX2 devs always seem to run away from giving a straight answer as though their lives depend on it. I'd just like a straight answer, why is internal rendering so broken, and are you ever going to fix it?

Clearly depends on the game. So which one do you play?

Alright, so maybe I worded that a little provocatively, but it worked. So the devs are running away from the issue? They're dropping the ball on the dream of playing ps2 games in glorious sharp hd resolutions like we can already with N64 games, and Gamecube games, and Psx games? There's no reason to scrap the current without something better to replace it.
I'll be posting some example screenshots of cross platform games spanning generations, n64, psx, gc, and ps2, all will be in 1080p internal rendering, all other image quality settings will be default and matched, so at least we can put any debate to bed on whether this is a legitimate issue or not. Or perhaps it isn't so much that pcsx2 can't provide a sharp hd render, but that it isn't configured to do so by default?

Let's cut to the chase, name a game that responds particularly well to raising the internal renderer, and I'll check it out, and don't give me games that offered 720p/1080i in engine because that is defeating the purpose of a properly implemented internal resolution selector.

Resident Evil: Outbreak, Grandia 3, Kingdom Hearts 1, Ratchet and Clank 1-4, Persona 3/4, Burnout 3, MGS2/3, Fatal Frame 3 (with patch), SOCOM 2, ect.

I think I may have the answer to the problem here but a lack of screenshots on your end makes this into a wild guess, not a definitive answer.

You say you are setting the "internal renderer" to 1080p which leads me to believe you are using this: https://i.imgur.com/O7xgHd7.png

Which adjusts the window frame's size relative to your host machine's display size.

What actually enhances video quality though, is the "Internal Resolution" field in the GS plugin settings: https://i.imgur.com/Og1LRaO.png

To get to this godsend of a configuration screen: https://i.imgur.com/HToYsPh.png

And the difference is very evident. Indeed at "Native" you could say it looks like flaming garbage that even an Atari 2600 could compete with and though I think that's more than an aggressive statement I wouldn't get mad at you for saying it: https://i.imgur.com/ABqhFyW.jpg

But then you flip the magic "3x Native" switch and balance is restored to the force: https://i.imgur.com/lFsueYC.jpg

Of course if you have the appropriate hardware you can jam it up even harder, but you may need to take some time and figure out exactly what configuration works best for each game.

Edit: I went ahead and bumped it out to 8x Native just as another test case. You'll notice it looks even more refined (and also that the difference in GS usage shoots up 20-30% from 3x Native and my hardware can no longer handle it at full speed): https://i.imgur.com/Lvq8Lip.jpg

Another edit: Greenshot is inexplicably using JPEG instead of my selected PNG setting for the gameplay captures so I re-ran them after maxing the quality settings on JPEG. #banjpeg2017

instead of blatantly whining, maybe you could answer the questions.

Did you even read the thread? The poll was about scraping custom internal resolutions in favor of keeping scaling only, for all the reasons mentioned there.

I don't really care about scaling vs custom resolution but does custom resolution actually makes the games to look better than for example 3x/4x scaling

I guess scaling can require more GPU power because (640x448)*4 is 1920x1440
Depending on the game 2x/3x looks good enough for me on 24inch 1080p monitor
