Will my custom built PC run PCSX2?
#1
I am studying computers and I wanted to know if I build my PC, will my setup work to run PCSX2 and play a decent amount of games. And if I overclock, how far should I O.C. my processor to run it and be stable for other things.

Future PC I'm gonna build:
Motherboard: GIGABYTE GA-MA785GM-US2H
CPU:
AMD Phenom II X2 550 Black Edition Callisto 3.1GHz (unlockable to Quad core)
2 x 512KB L2 Cache/6MB L3 Cache
Socket AM3 80W
RAM:
CORSAIR 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 4200 (internal)
O.S.:Windows 7 Home Premium or Ultimate 64-bit; Vista or XP/ 7 Ultimate 64-bit (Dual boot)
Hard Drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB
Power Supply: APEX AL-D500EXP 500W ATX12V Power Supply

CPU fan and heatsink is the one thing I need help on. Let me know if there are any affordable and good for O.C.

I've also seen PCSX2 run pretty good on win7, but should I stick with Vista?

Any comments or suggestions will be helpful.

I have a similar setup, although i have a phenom x3 720 @3,2ghz but pcsx2 only uses 2 cores anyway so there should be no difference. I have same amount of RAM and the GA-MA770-UDP motherboard from gigabyte (slimer version of the one u have).
The only thing i am not sure about is the onboard? Graphic card you mentioned^^ Pcsx2 is more cpu dependend but a nice graphic card is required as well. I have a Radeon4850, but i have never heard of onboard radeons before so i have no idea where to fit a radeon4200 onboard in Smile

I can run about any game i tried so far and i mean run them so they are perfectly playable and fun at full speeds. But you have to play around with the configs and try different plugin versions for some games to make them run good. I play FFX at 3*scale with msaa=8 and it looks just perfect that way. Things like God of War are more demanding of course and needs speed hacks to run at full speed with 3*scale but it works and damn its just nice to play gow on your pc with a xbox360 pad Laugh i love doing things different!

I would get a graphics card like yours but if I get one, it will block the sata connections. I have a stocked (on motherboard) graphics chip.

Onboard graphics are going to hurt. A lot. I would be shocked and amazed if it could run more than a handful of games at near-full speed.

I'd consider switching motherboards if it's going to be a problem, bad port placement isn't too encouraging. Or just get a GPU that isn't quite as long.

What do you recommend? But it has to be a ATI card because I don't like Nvidia cards. Their good but I prefer Radeons. Unless it's affordable, good, and can match my cpu with no problems, then I'll decide.

If you are short on money, the Radeon 4670 is a viable option too. Very low power consumption, low price and acceptable performance. Definitely enough to enjoy PCSX2 with, which you cannot say about the onboard-GPU.

As for CPU coolers I recommend one of them:
HDT-S963

or

Hyper TX3

btw I'm glad to see someone finally asking for custom PC recommendations and not crappy laptops Biggrin
Intel i5 3450
AsRock B75-Pro3-M
Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X OC
8GB DDR3-1333 RAM
Sandisk Ultra Plus 256GB
Seagate 7200.14 1TB x2
Enermax Triathlor 450W PSU

Wow, I was considering the cool master too because it is affordable and has ok reviews. can't use the HDT-S963 cause is does not support an am3 socket. And I'll look up that video card. I just don't want it too big or it will block my sata ports.
