what is "lost money"?

please note that, statistically, most pirates are either a) young people with no income whatsoever, b) people with income from the so called "developing countries" or c) people who don't give a *****. the first two have no means to support the creator either because a) they have no money anyway, b) they have no access to viable channels of distribution. the third group won't buy anything anyway.

now, the losses you're mentioning are called potential losses, which means, for example, if 1000 people downloaded a product which costs $29,99, the company lost $29,99 * 1000 = $29 990. however, this doesn't take into account the fact that not all of these people would buy the product even if it wasn't pirated in the first place. also, some people like to "try first, buy later if good".

anyway, to cut the story short, companies bankrupting because of piracy is *****.

I'm not saying piracy is good, creators deserve all the support they get. I'm also not saying that piracy doesn't harm distributors, however assuming that projected losses translate automatically and wholly to real losses is a load of crap.

also, money you pay for a product in a store doesn't neccessarily go to the creator's pocket, but that's a whole another story.
