okami sound problems

the sfx sounds OK but the speech sounds completely scrambled. im using SPU sound plugin. any suggestions? i turned off speedhacks and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

no, when i messed around with some audio settings i could hear japanese, just very very garbled and a lot of weird reverb. the original voice audio is most intelligible when that fairy chick at the beginning of the game is talking.
