pcsx2 destroyed my laptop
#1
Hi everyone,

although I've been reading posts on this forum for a long time, this is my first one written: and the reason is that I'm desperate.

I've been playing lately smt3 nocturne (PAL edition) on my laptop (dual core 2,50 ghz, 3gb ddr3 of ram, graphic card nvidia 8600M GS 512mb, hard disk 160gb 5800 rpm, os Windows XP Professional with SP3) with pcsx2 0.9.6.
Two days ago I've started encountering crushes at the start of the 3rd Kalpa, during dialogues with the white knight. Trying solving the problem, I used some configurations that I found on this site. Unfortunately during these tests the game froze, and since there was no way to esc from the emulator I used the power button to restart the computer. That was the start of my nightmere. From that moment I haven't been able to restart properly Windows ( I can't use any graphical driver on my system, if I install one Windows won't start and I have to uninstall it on Safe Mode just to make Windows work properly. In other words, it's like having no graphic card working in my system at all). I've also noted that during the start of the computer, when the Intel logo appear on screen, there are several vertical yellow lines on the logo and on the bottom of the screen...

Ehm...Any idea how to resolve the problem? (I've already formatted Windows, but it didn't work)

no it didint. Its imposible for pcsx2 to destroy any hardware
your laptop is malfunctioning because
1. laptops are poor compared to stationar computers
2. its overheating because its small and doesnt have any real heatsink and its all dusty inside since you didint clean it for 7 years
3. its dying just like that, sometimes some computer parts just die and you need to replace em
4. your laptop is swarmed with viruses because you visit strange porn sites
Check my profile for hardware/software and games i played on PCSX2.

...it's more like graphic card issue, & i think this has nothing to do with emulator, 'cause if your computer can run under full load, then it's no problem for emulator, if it can't run under full load, then its hardware problem, ...that vertical lines suggest me that Video RAM isn't OK, but it can be something else too, another thing is that Graphic card refuses to work with driver, wich also points that graphic card isn't running ok...

If someone has a laptop with additional graphic card, try to switch them, to see if it's making problems, if you don't know how to do that, go & ask in any of services, it should be for free...

Cheers...

It seems that your are a victim of badly produced 8600 mobile geforce series. TSMC has manufactured for nvidia a batch of chips that were prone to overheat and damage itself. There's not much you can do, apart from contacting your notebook vendor.
Your symptoms are parallel with these I had when I voltmoded my Geforce 5600 ultra.

Thanks everyone for fast replys.

That's what I've feared the most: hardware problem!Sad
The fact is my warranty with dpc tech has expired two weeks ago. My last hope is a computer shop near my house that usually does also reparations. Maybe they can replace that ******* 8600M with another one that works.
Any idea of similar graphic card that can be placed in my laptop that doesn't have same problems as the 8600?

Yeah I know nataq01 that is not pcsx2 fault, truth is I just needed a shocking title in order to gain attention to my thread and solve ASAP my problem. Sorry for that!Biggrin

nope you cant replace it since 8600M GS isnt mxm (only MXM laptop gpu's can) all you can really do is put new cool paste on it and clean the fans / get laptop cooler

When the sensor on the GPU cooler fan on my last work laptop decided to stop working, I had no choice but to junk the whole thing. The GPU was irreparably damaged by a single overheating, and so even after I hotwired the fan to be on 24/7 it still couldn't boot stable. The GPUs on laptops are almost universally built onto the motherboards. As noted by ChronicNL, only via the (fairly new) MXM technology can a laptop have a replaceable GPU, and only a handful of newer GPU models are even available in MXM form. So there is absolutely certainty that your 8600 doesn't qualify. Sad

So yeah, you probably junked your laptop. Don't feel too bad. As you noticed it happens a lot, especially with laptops equipped with GPUs that aren't complete crap on the benchmarks. It's typically the GPU that drains the most power and generates the most heat, more so than the CPU, ram, hard drives, or any other components -- and a laptop that's not equipped with one of the power miser ATI/Intel GPU chipsets will typically have a GPU that outheats the rest of the laptop combined. Of course those ATI/Intel GPUs are also very poor for gaming. So you're forced to pick your poison: slow, cool, and mostly stable vs. or fast, hot, and a potentially ticking timebomb.

(edit: then again I've managed to junk three laptops in 6 years and I don't even do much gaming on them -- so I guess they're all ticking timebombs unless you just permanently mount it onto one of those fancy ergo-cool docking stations. And at that point it's a desktop, heh).

Maybe replacement of your motherboard wouldn't be so expensive. However, even with the new one, you would be at risk having same gpu overheating issue. All I remember some of the vendors introduced bioses that prevent 8600m from reaching critical temperatures.
