ps2 controller can't set buttons

Using Pcsx2 0.9.7 beta.
I bought a usb adapter to use a sony ps2 controller. When I try to configure Lilypad10 and set the buttons, it only lets me set the analog buttons and the start and select. It doesn't seem to recognize when I press the square, circle, cross, and triangle, L1 L2 R1 R2, and Dpad buttons. Any ideas?

4G ram
ATI HD 5470 500mb Graphics

Does everything work properly with the windows built in diagnostics? If not you probably have driver issues

I believe the diagnostics is fine, I read the box for my usb adapter and noticed that it said for PsX controller. USB PSII2 Player Convertor is the closest thing I can find to a brand name. If I use an old playstation controller it works fine but there are no analog sticks. Could this simply be an incompatible device?
