Try imgburn, maybe that will work. This implies your disc is damaged, try cleaning it, although that won't do much if it's badly scratched.

It's not legal to copy someone else's disc, but if you have an original copy of your own I think you're OK. If they're light scratches though, you may as well take it to your local video rental store and see if they can repair the disc.

You can try ripping it with another DVD drive that might do better. It's illegal to rip your friend's disc unless you own it

Well if the legal problem is solved :
Try Alcohol 120% trail or so.
It has an option that is called ignore reading errors. You should be able to do it.
